Come on Barbie, let's go party! Here's how to 'get the look' of the much-anticipated Barbie movie, coming to cinemas July 2023.
Life in plastic, it’s fantastic! In great news for Barbie lovers everywhere, the Barbie movie is coming to theaters in 2023. The live-action throwback film – officially in production – stars Australian actress Margot Robbie as Barbie and Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling as Ken. The early glimpses of the film already have us swooning.
For those who can’t wait to watch it in theatres, there are tonnes of behind-the-scenes snaps floating around online – and from the bedazzled costumes to Ryan’s hair, they’re the stuff that Barbie dreamhouses are made of! If you’re a die-hard pink-lover, a Barbie design stan, or simply creating content for a brand that could stand to leverage the Barbie aesthetic, here’s how to get the Barbie look.
Barbie made her original debut in 1959 at the American International Toy Fair in New York City. Manufactured by the American toy company Mattel, the original Barbie doll was designed by US businesswoman Ruth Handler.
Barbie soon became the must-have toy worldwide, known for her iconic look, accessories, clothes, friends, and merchandise. 60 years on, Barbie is still one of the most popular dolls on the market, with over a billion Barbie dolls sold globally.
Barbie is such a legend that she even has her own Pantone color! In 2012, Mattel and Pantone joined forces to release the ‘pink in Pantone barbie doll,’ a limited-edition Barbie designed by Linda Kyaw. Barbie’s signature color was translated into PMS 219C – a shade of pink owned by Mattel. This designer Barbie was released wearing a Pantone pink dress, a skirt adorned with Pantone color chips, and – of course – pink-soled stilettos.
Featuring bright neon color palettes and Barbie colors, 80s patterns and textures, a tonne of lycra, and – of course, a sea of the unmistakable Barbie pink – if early photos are to be believed, the Barbie movie will serve up some iconic looks. The characters have been spotted donning sparkly cowboy–cowgirl getups, skating in 80s workout gear complete with neon sweatbands and pink roller skates, and even driving around in a pink, shiny car wearing blue and white polka-dot bandanas. It’s a visual feast and provides plenty of inspiration for brands looking to capitalize on the renewed interest in the Barbie franchise and the Barbie pink palette.
