Envato co-founders Collis and Cyan Ta’eed have been recognised as Entrepreneurs of the Year at a ceremony last night in Melbourne, Australia.

The duo took out the award in the Services category for the Southern Region of Australia, as part of the global EY Entrepreneur of the Year award program. They now progress to represent their region in the Australian awards.

“When you’re in the thick of things, you don’t often get the chance to stop and think about everything that’s happened,” says Collis Ta’eed.

“The Entrepreneur of the Year program forces you to take stock. It’s really nice. It makes you feel like wow, we’ve come good. I had to buy a suit for the night. It’s clearly a lucky suit, and I will never take it off again!”

In their early 20s,  Cyan and Collis were looking for a way to work online while they travelled. They started Envato in 2006 and made $10 in their first day. By the end of the year, they were selling $1,000 worth of digital design content per week.

Today, Envato operates one of the largest online creative platforms of its kind. It helps businesses represent themselves through websites, video, branding, print and other media. A community of independent designers, developers and creatives provides freelance services on Envato Studio, digital content on Envato Market and educational courses on Envato Tuts+. Envato generates revenue by charging platform and service fees to its buyers and sellers.

Envato now has 1.75 million active buyers all over the world and over 5 million community members.

“After nearly 10 years growing Envato, it’s wonderful to have the company and the work we’ve done acknowledged by the awards,” says Cyan Ta’eed.

“The other entrepreneurs we have met have been incredibly inspiring, and honestly every single one deserved to win. We’re really looking forward to going on to represent our region in the national EOY awards, and meeting amazing entrepreneurs from around Australia.”

Businesses will always need branding and creative marketing to help them stand out. Envato’s offerings help them achieve these needs in a cost-effective way, sourcing the best talent from around the globe.

Cyan and Collis’ vision is for Envato to be accessible by anyone. They see substantial potential for taking Envato into other languages and providing more localised experiences.

EY Entrepreneur Of The Year (TM) is the world’s most prestigious business award for entrepreneurs. As the first and only truly global award of its kind, it celebrates those who are building and leading successful, growing and dynamic businesses, recognising them through regional, national and global awards programs in more than 145 cities in over 60 countries.
